He left Spain and took refuge in France with his mother at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. He studied to become an architect but began to be known, in the sixties, as an enfant terrible of the French fashion world. Rabanne pursued her career in fashion creating jewelry for Givenchy, Dior and Balenciaga. He started his own fashion house in 1966. He used unusual materials such as metal, paper and plastic for his models. Coco Chanel renamed the colleague "the metallurgist of fashion" because he used a lot of metal in his creations. He was the first designer ever to use music in his fashion shows.

Paco Rabanne is known for his stage costumes in films such as Barbarella. Françoise Hardy was a great admirer of Rabanne's stylistic models.

Rabanne is also interested in paranormal phenomena and was disliked by the public for his erroneous predictions regarding the fall of the Russian space station Mir in Paris in 1999.

An artist who used Paco Rabanne's models in the 60s is Romina Power.

In 1973 he launched the Paco Rabanne Pour Homme men's eau de toilette.
